Jim Lewis's Lunar Lander Site
Last update 7/27/2009

Welcome to my Lunar Lander site. I first wrote this game in BASIC on my TI 99/4A. I then wrote it for OS/2 in the 90s and now in Java. I have tried to make the game easy to learn but still enjoyable to play.

The object of the game is to land on every red landing pad on the level. When that is accomplished you move up to the next level. Each level is harder as there are more asteroids and the terrain is more difficult.

Game play:

  • Left arrow to go left
  • Right arrow to go right
  • Up arrow to go up
  • F3 to Pause the game (beta4 and after)

Game hints:

  • You normally want to press and release the keys very quickly. Holding them down will get you out of control very quickly.
  • It may seem counter-intuitive, but in many cases you need to apply a thrust in one direction and then immediately apply some in the other direction. This sounds hard but the more you play the easier it gets.
  • You must be at zero sideways motion, completely on the red pad, and not going too fast in order to land successfully.
  • Watch your power! If the lander goes dark you have run out (not a good way to fly).

These are listed latest version first:

Beta 5   1.8   7/27/2009 A   More initial ship power. Land on every pad and send in the bonus # for a prize!

Beta 4   1.7   7/22/2009 B   Addition of shields. Also, land on every pad and send in the bonus # for a prize!

Beta 3   1.6   7/21/2009 A   Addition of Level 3.

Beta 2   1.4   7/4/2009 A   Addition of Level 2.

Beta 1   1.3   6/23/2009 A   Asteroids cause damage instead of outright destruction.

1.0   1/16/98b (original version)
